  1. High Definition Media Interface cables

  2. since you have a philips, they describe it very well at their site

    HDMI

Look for the model number of your Philips and goto this site and click on the right one - in it, choose Specification , there you will find that the 3 HDMI ports.  i think they are all Inputs, not outputs.

    All the best :)

  4. The 3 HDIM ports on your TV are Inputs, not outputs... You can connect 1 cable from your DVD player to your TV, you could use another to go from your cable box to your TV... That is provided you have an HDMI cable box.  If your cable box connects to your home theater system and they both have HDMI... Output on the cable box and input on the home theater system then use put the HDMI cable between the cable box and the home theater system and use one to go from the home theater system to the TV instead of going directly from the cable box to the TV.

You should also use an optical audio cable between the cable box and the home theater system.

  5. Only 1 hdmi cable for a dvd player.  This will bring the best quality of HD to your HDTV.  I have a 37" inch Magnavox (philips) tv with 1080I.  I use component cables and the HD is sooooo good, but on my Wii I use HDMI and the HD is astounding.  Hope this helps.  I'd go with HDMI, the run around 50-100$, Component cables are around 25-50$
