  1. "Hillbillies" are basically poor people living in the Appalachain mountains, ignorant of modern American culture and customs.  Most are uneducated - and some still fly the Confederate flag from the Civil War.  There are many hillbillies in Tennessee and West Virginia.

  2. Most of the answers are partially, hillbillies are country people who live in hilly regions of a country, they are stereoo typed as illiterate, inbred, immoral,whiskey/moonshiners who tend to stay in there area and are very secretive.

In truth they are hard working people, who are of deep faith, who are very proud of there country and will defend there beliefs even unto death.

Today Kentuckians and West Virginians are called Hillbillies.

  3. Britney Spears

    Jamie Lynn Spears

    Miley Cyrus

    Billy Ray Cyrus

Their horrid straight out of the Tenneessee mountains or Mississippi bayou accents, they have middle names like Ray and they get pregnant when they're 16.

  4. guys named william who live in the appalachian mountains

  5. i  think  its  a more  polite  way  of  saying  "country  bumpkin" .

    i am  not  sure  ,though.

  6. hillbillies are those redneck tom-sawyer type people from the simpsons

  7. "HIllbilly" is a rather derogatory term for people living in the Eastern mountains of the United States (Appalachia.)  They're caricatured in the comic strip "Snuffy Smith,"  are often stereotyped as moonshiners who commit incest, and are depicted in popular art as barefoot, bearded men wearing overalls or jeans with rope belts and carrying long shotguns.  Supposedly they live rather primitively, without electricity or indoor plumbing.  In reality, there are indeed some poor backwoods farmers in Appalachia.  Some of the older people can remember songs they learned from their grandparents.  However, if you believe the rest of this description, well, as Anne Landers used to say, I know a bridge in Brooklyn that you might be interested in buying.

  8. First of all, they are usually people who live in very insular communities, which are spread out in hilly areas.  Hence the term (hill).  The term billies is a little more esoteric.  Many people who lived in the hills, tended to be uneducated (in an academic sense), were bound by long standing superstitions, intermarried, simple, simplistic, extremely rural, and generally suspicious of outsiders. One of the stereotypical ideas was that they were all alcoholics (because they made moonshine), that they were always feuding with their neighbors, and that they were not really loyal Americans, circumventing the laws when ever possible. Of course, much of this is folk lore, but there is an aspect of truth to all of it.

These people were not all in the same place, however, there are many locations that have been deemed as locations of hillbillies.  The mountains of West Virginia, Kentucky, Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, (basically, these states!)  But this is a classification that persists today.  Many people have come out of the hills to go on and become very well known. Authors, singers, scientists, clergymen, etc.

Unfortunately, there are still people who live in the very rural and still make moonshine, marry their cousins, fight with each other, and ignore the laws of their community, state and country.

They tended to be people who had come from Great Britain in their earlier days, many from Scotland and Ireland,  (Probably the most long standing feud was betweem the Martins and the McCoys, you should be able to google that and find out a lot of information), of course with their greatest emeny being the people who had come from England.

I have gone on long enough.  Thank goodness most of this stuff is just history, but there are still hillbillies for sure!

  9. Usually local people who live in the hill country. Not necessarily any dumber that the rest of us. There are other terms- country hick, red neck, blue neck,  and so on. Generally anyone who does not live in the city. The only difference is just where they live.

  10. yes they are real and they live in a place called banjo island!!! have you heard of it?

  11. Hillbillies are people who actually lived on the mountains.  You could see their homes built on stilts.  They were real people and some still exist in the Ozarks and Appalachian mountain regions.  The Scottish expressions, "hill-folk" and "billie" which was a synonym for "fellow", similar to "guy" or "bloke".

  12. Hillbilly's are Americans who originated in scotland and were banished to Ireland by the english. They became known as people with no country in Ireland and migrated to the states in the mountains. They made their money making moonshine and trapping. They are people who are known to keep their word and fight for freedom. If you need more info Google it.The american lib will tell you they are uneducated only because they know nothing about hillbillys.
