  1. to establish the age of other fossils found near the index fossils.


  2. Index fossils are used to date rocks.

    But note that rocks are also used to date fossils!

    This circular reasoning is all based on the uniformitarian assumption that rocks were laid down slowly over millions of years.

    Actually the fact the fossils are found at all is evidence of rapid burial and catastrophe. A creature that dies in normal conditions is eaten or rots in days or less.

    Many fossils found with amazing detail. Eg fish scales, and even fish in the middle of giving birth!
