Try reading Jean Baudrillards essays in "The Gulf War did not take place", and his book "simulations", as a philosopher and writer he has possibly some of the most comprehensive writings on object/image, media and society.

Somewhere in all these writings he speaks of the possibility of image manipulation as further undermining societies trust in the media (how do we know what is real and not real=distrust), the reporting of the real in a not real way etc etc, theres just too much for me to start listing here :-)
