  1. a key blank is a piece of metal that is pre cut into a basic key shape. you can't open anything with it unless you use it to stab a piece of tape or cellophane wrapping.

    key blanks are put into a key cutting machine and then the machine reads all of the grooves and cuts in the original key and transfers the corresponding grooves and cuts into the key blank. after the key is cut then it is usually buffed and lightly ground to take off any metal "berries" or metal shavings that are not supposed to be there. the grooves and cuts in the key are what actually unlock locks, they fit in the key hole and when turned, hit the correct tumblers in the lock. not all original keys are allowed to be duplicated and certain key blanks are made to fit specific types or models of finished keys.
