I am going to visit a family friend in Geneva, and I am going to bring some presents for her kids, but I don't know what they are into over there. She has 3 sons, and their ages are 6,8 and 14. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated.

  1. Most boys here in Switzerland are heavily into sports. If you are coming from a city with a well-known team, get them some team jerseys, tees or baseball caps. Ice hockey is big, as is football (or soccer, depending on where you're from). Enjoy your trip!

  2. Moderation in all things.

  3. Kids in Switzerland are a lot like kids anywhere else.  They usually know the same famous TV shows and characters and keep up with much of the same trends as North America.  I think it depends a lot on the individual personalities of the kids - different kids like different things.  Perhaps see if you can find out the kids interests.  If not, I suggest perhaps bringing something for the kids from your country - a specialty or souvenir of the region - a sports item from a local team is a wonderful idea.  I know that the movie "Cars" was popular here around Christmas time.  Since movies tend to come out later here than in North America perhaps you could get them accessories or toys from one of the latest Disney films.  I also found that in North America there were a lot of discovery stores that I haven't been able to find here - perhaps something really cool from such a store - maybe a model to build or something similar for the older kids (hard to say of course without knowing the kids).  Another fantastic idea for the younger boys is a lego set - I have rarely met a boy here who doesn't like it.  Note that DVD's have a different regional code here and won't play on the machine unless the machine has been fixed to play them. Remember, of course, that in Geneva French is spoken and you would have to consider whether the children speak only French or some English as well.

  4. They like cheese, cuckoo clocks and yodeling.
