  1. Mainframe is a dated word from back when a company had one centeral processing unit and several terminals (keyboards and monitors.) Now they are called mother computers or servers. They could look like the computer your working on right now to the huge computers that handle most internet traffic, so It's hard to give a photo. If you want to see a really old one from the 1970's google IBM 1130.

  4. I am afraid I have no photos, but a mainframe generally refers to a CENTRALISED computing architecture. This is were 1 central system does almost ALL of the work for dozens+ clients.

You have a thin client, i.e a crumby computer whose only use is to interface into the mainframe.

Then you have the mainframe where all the processing for all the clients is done and sent back to be displayed on the client that requested each bit.

People would often use CRAYS back in the old days as a mainframe.

SAAS or software as a service seems to be aiming to re-ignite this architecture philosophy.

  5. Mainframes (often colloquially referred to as Big Iron[1]) are computers used mainly by large organizations for critical applications, typically bulk data processing such as census, industry and consumer statistics, ERP, and financial transaction processing.

  6. A mainframe computer is a gigantic early computer. They were more common in the 1960's and 70's. It was in this era that business computing was really starting to take off. In a nutshell they were very gigantic computers and compared to today's standards, very very slow and didn't hold much storage. Often times people were connected to them via some sort of serial cable and used a dumb terminal to work on them. A dumb terminal is essentially a monitor and a keyboard that connected to the mainframe. The following pic is an old IBM mainframe.
