So i went to the Orthodontist as an emergency visit because i have been in pain since i got my top and bottom front braces on Monday. My 1 front tooth is still in severe pain but it's like the ortho. didn't care. I did not know until they told me. I got the rest of my braces put on today. I was supposed to have them done on October 1st that way it would have gave me time to heal from having 8 teeth including wisdom pulled last wednesday. So what are the metal bands for? And why do you think they put the rest of the braces on except the last tooth today? Because now i am in more pain

  1. well the metal bands are to pull your teeth together. The orthodontist tells you not to eat crunchy, hard, or chewy foods. Also dont chew gum often or eat popcorn. No one ever listens to this. Eat what you want but do be careful

  2. the bands around your molar are for strength, since they are the most anchored teeth, via the braces, your molars will be pulling on the rest of your teeth to straighten them out.  as for the pain...it only gets worse.  every time you have them tightened, the next 4 or 5 days will be miserable.  REMEMBER that YOU are a PATIENT, no matter how old you are.  don't be afraid to ask for pain medicine.  a half a vicodin would've made my life easy when i had braces but i didnt know to ask.  they put the bands on first so they can fully bond to the tooth before they start pulling on them.

  3. the metal band pulls the teeth together as they tigten it.  the pain is from your teeth being pulled from their normal position to a more perfect position.  you should expect the pain to linger for a couple of days.  take some advil and your going to have to get used to the pain.

  4. They are to pull your teeth together. You should be taking painkillers. No need to be in pain.

  5. They are called anchoring bands and they are used to bind the large molars that the wires are attached to. The teeth serve as anchors for the wires that go to all the teeth.
