Question:

What are modern garters like?

My fiance wants to do a garter toss, but I don't wear knee-highs normally, so I don't know what a garter nowadays should look like. I'm familiar with tied ones, but apparently for a garter toss they should be elastic. I've seen some for sale at bridal shops, but they all have lace. What should I use as a basis for making one/is there anywhere I can buy one?

And I know that a lot of women wear lacy underwear, but I find it incredibly uncomfortable, so I have never developed a tolerance to the look. It's going to be humiliating enough to have my underwear on display without it being lace.

  1. Your underwear won't be on display.  You can just purchase a cheap elastic garter in your wedding colors and throw it on your leg a few minutes before the garter toss begins, that way the lace won't bother you.  The groom normally takes the dress up to just above the knee where the garter can show or he can go "deep sea diving" underneath your dress so as not to expose your leg if you choose.

  3. They are pretty simple to make, just get some 1" wide ribbon of a favorite color or wedding color, and cut two pieces the same length, measure your leg to see how long it needs to be and then add half of what that length is to the total length.  Buy some elastic that is 3/4" thick and sew the two pieces of ribbon together and insert the elastic.  You can make it so the garter goes around your calf instead of your thigh if you don't want it that high.  You can sew on a charm if you would like.

  4. Yes you can find them without lace.  You can use something real simple!  These would be the easier ones to make.  You can change it up.  Instead of bows/flowers and lace maybe just sew on a charm.  Maybe the initial of your new last name.

  6. i hope you realize that almost EVERY bride these days wear lace ones, as well as elastic. you can find one without lace, but there is absolutely nothing to be embarassed about for the garter toss when the garter is lace.
