  1. Get a brandy glass, and bet someone they can't pick an olive/cherry (or other small cherry sized ball that you have handy) up off a table, using only the brandy glass without damaging it or the glass, or touching the ball.

The solution is to place the brandy glass over the ball and force the ball to spin around the glass.

The centrifugal force will keep the ball in the glass, allowing you to pick it up off the table.

  2. This one takes a while to explain, but if you have larceny in your heart you can make money with it for decades to come...

Learn how to perform any simple card forcing trick.

    The mug picks a card

(You already know what it is, but he doesn't know you know)

He shows the card to witnesses

It is returned to the deck

You shuffle and then start dealing

Eventually you will deal the chosen card face up on the table

    Keep dealing...

The mug can see his card on the table

    You have dealt past it

He assumes you have made a mistake

Having dealt a couple of extra cards onto the table you now say, "I bet the next card I turn over will be the one you chose."

The mug will bet quite large sums that you can't do it.

Get one of the witnesses to hold the money.

The mug expects you to turn the next card on the top of the deck

    But you don't

You reach to the chosen card on the table and turn it face down.

    Collect the money and run.

(Don't give the money back to them)

"Self-working" card tricks are good enough for this type of scam.

One piece of advice - don't run the con "out of the blue". Wait until somebody else starts talking about cards or playing with cards and then bide your time.

Also, in order to get a big bet from the mug, act a bit like a know-it-all. Tell him you are the smartest card-handler in town and he is a real amateur. That will get him in the mood to take you down a peg or two (and encourage him to bet big in order to teach you a lesson).

Finally, practise, practise, practise. Memorise your patter and get the timing just right.
