  1. Revenge in this novel really comes in the form of fiscal one-upmanship, demonstrated by Cathy's betrothal to Edward and Heathcliff's fortune-seeking in the States. Money (much more than class difference) was the only factor keeping the pampered princess from marrying Heathcliff outright, so it is only natural that he wanted to take vengeance by becoming even more affluent than the neighbor wife-thief. Their loves are jealous, grasping to the point of antipathy, yet Cathy's declaration of "I am Heathcliff" really gets to the crux of their dilemma.
