To its members mormones is denominated normally. Its original doctrine was based on the belief that the Christianity had undergone a progressive process of deterioration and corruption, reason why was necessary to carry out the restoration of the true Gospel. Nevertheless, that restoration made a new revelation necessary of God, that gave the truths of the Christianity in a pure form and that restored the divine sacerdotal authority of the old apostles. 5. Just curious - why did you post this in the Anthropology section?

I'm going to make some assumptions as to why you posted it here and offer the following answer based on the result.

The people found to be indigenous to the North and South American continents are referred to in the Book of Mormon.  They are Lamanites...  There are many, many different sects, but the general term for all is Lamanite.  A corresponding group, The Nephites, were exterminated by the Lamanites.  The last Nephite remaining (Moroni) sealed up the records of his people on Gold and Brass plates and hid them before his death in circa 450 AD.  In 1823, in resurrected form, the 'angel' Moroni appeared to Joseph Smith, a young man living in upstate NY, and disclosed the location of the plates to him.  In 1827, Joseph Smith dug them up and began translating them.  The result is "The Book of Mormon, another testament of Jesus Christ". It records the history of the people in this hemisphere and Christ's dealings with them.
