What are moving walkways for?

Just like a million other people, I've wondered what they were for for yearss. anyone know?

Like a car, they make it easier to get from one point to another in a fairly short amount of time for a whole lot of folks.  Like the Denver Airport.

And for a small number of folks, a great way to get an arm or a leg ripped off.

They are very effective if you are carrying allot of heavy things at the airport and trying to hurry to the next plane.I wish they were longer.

In Heathrow airport there are two and it speeds it up for you otherwise it would be such a long walk. Its possibly walking traffic calming measures in places which at peak times are known to have alot of people congested
