What are must-dos for a first timer in Dublin?...something a guidebook wouldn't tell you?

I'll be there for about a week (Sept 5-.11)..I'd like to hear advice from locals or people that have had memorable experiences there. P.S. I'm on a budget so nothing outrageously expensive.

My best Friend went to the emerald Isle and he had a blast!!! as I understand it the people are just great! and there's a pub every six feet or so through out the land!!! now that's my kind of country!

the old gaol at kilmainham is well worth a look.

try and get tickets for the gaelic games,or one of dublins local soccer clubs;ie BOHEMIANS!

Try to spend as much time with the Irish, I assure you that they'll make your stay memorable!! :) Go out and dance till morning, eat a kebab afterwards. Use public transport (buses and your own feet) rather than taxis. Take a long walk alongside the Liffey river. Visit places around Dublin, such as Blackrock and Howth.

I don't know what your guide says, but I surely recommend a visit to the Dublin Castle - Dublinia, you'll have a great time!! Must say it's a shame being in Dublin and not visiting the Guinness brewery or the Trinity College premises, along with its famous library. Very interesting and enjoyable streets are the Grafton Street and Temple Bar.

I suggest you do all the shopping in Henry Street, as it abounds with highly rated second-hand shops (Grafton Street offers only designers' stores). If your budget allows it, you should most certainly take the early morning train Dublin-Galway and spend a day in the western part of Ireland. There're some stunning sights, such as the Cliffs of Moher.

Stay in the inner city and dont go into residential areas ,Dublin is a rough place.There are tons of clubs and stuff to do in the innercity and all in walking distance.Being on a budget is going to be hard as dublin is really exspensive.Remember you dont tip in bars.drink in the hotel before you go out.The inner city has lots of attractions .Have fun ,wish i were you.I am from Dublin but im living in the us 10 years now.

You should go to Dublin city and see things like temple bar,the GPO,the molly mallone statue and trinity college!

Use public transport like a local as taxis are expensive.  Take the DART and go to Malahide where you will find a nice town and Malahide Castle.  Go to Howth and walk along the beach there.  Or, takae the DART south to Bray and enjoy the seaside.  The towns in between Dublin and Bray are nice and cheaper to shop in than the city centre.  Blackrock has a nice shopping centre.  

Enjoy the pubs off the beaten path.  Go to places away from Temple Bar area as they are cheaper and less crowded.

Visit county Wicklow which is a near Dublin.  Take a day trip to Powerscourt Gardens, and/or Glendalough.  You will find a day tour at the Dublin Visitor Centre on Suffolk Street (is an old church off the top of Grafton St) or find one online.  If the weather is nice, go for it.  You will get a chance ot leave Dublin and see rural, beautiful Ireland not too far away from Dublin.  It is amazing and can be done in a day.  You will be glad to leave the hustle and bustle of Dublin.

To eat cheap, try a nice pub O'Neills across from the Dublin tourist center and next to the post office there on Suffolk Street.  You can get a carvery meal for about 10 euro (cheap for Dublin).

Also, for a laugh, eat a kebab after a night out like a local.  We would brave it and go to Abrekebabra Dame Street in the city centre near the Temple Bar area.
