Question:

What are my chances of being medically discharged for a 5th cordial fracture in my dominant hand?

I am an OSUT soldier, finished basic, but sent on con leave right before AIT started. I got a 5th cordial fracture during training, which required surgery that involved 2 removable pins being placed inside my hand through 2 fingers. After 3 weeks at home (I'm returning next week), the doctor's here told me that the healing process has not even started ad is nowhere near ready for training. My DS is refusing to extend my con leave as highly suggested by a doctor, so I will be returning completely broken. I can not move my pinky or ring finger at all, and my wrist/hand is casted to where I can't move any part of my hand. If the cast is removed, my hand goes into excruciating pains that I can not handle. I can not tie my own boots, and it is extremely difficult getting dressed and even going to the restroom. This is also my dominant hand, so it's difficult really tdo anything. This hand is also unusable and ocmpletely immobile so I literally am a one-hand man.

Again, if healing hasn't started and I am nowhere near being ready for training, then will I get dischared or what? It's the 2nd time I have broken my hand, only once while in the service, once before I enlisted. I doubt I will ever be able to do much with this hand again.

And I forgot to add, the doctor told me that I may never have feelinf in the left side of my hand again due to nerve damage when the pins were inserted. I will also have to do physical therapy much later on once I am healed to a certain point so I can learn to use my fingers again.

I am coming from Ft. Leonard Wood's

  1. Wow. How did you break it? Don't tell me you punched the wall. God please don't tell me you did that. But yes, please do share how you broke it. hehe.

  2. I think there is a high possibilty you will be discharged until it is healed and if you regain feeling you will most likely need a waiver to get back in but they might not take the waiver.
