i'm a florida resident. i wanna be a gunner's mate. i took a few practice asvab tests and scored very well. i wanna know what my chances are of getting stationed in florida. i know that florida, california, and hawaii are the hardest to get into with the coast guard because they're the most requested. i really dont care where exactly in florida as long as its there. but does my chances of getting in florida increase because i'm already a resident? or maybe scoring well on the asvab increase it? or both?

  1. yeah I was told by a recruiter that i'd have a good chance of being stationed in my choice district because of my ASVAB (91), but I read the rules more and it says you either pick a guaranteed district or A-school. Guaranteed A-school has a 2 year wait list though, so I wouldn't put too much faith in guaranteed district either LOL.

The recruiters tell half the story, you have to dig further for yourself. Ask to meet with some enlisted folks who aren't recruiters, they'll tell you the truth.

Worst scenario is you have to work in a crappy district for a year, then keep your eyes open for announcements of 'critical fills' for a transfer to FL.

Also depending on your job, you might not even be in FL that much even tho you're stationed there. Could be on a cutter for months.

  2. When you talk with the recruiter ask him or her about a gauranteed district. This puts a clause in you contract that you will be stationed in a certain district for your first tour. I am not sure if you can do it if you go to A-school directly after bootcamp. I was stationed in Fl for two CG tours, Hawaii for two and Texas and my husband has spent 9 out of his 10 year CG carreer in Fl so it isn't that hard. And no your chances are not better because you are a resident or scoring high on the ASVAB. Anyway ask about gauranteed district before you sign anything.

  3.   From my personal experience ,I think your chances are better at winning the lottery without even buying a ticket than with serving in the area of your wishes.

They may tell you one thing until they get that signature, then it's all up to them.
