Question:

What are my chances of joining the US Coast Guard?

I am currently a college freshman, and undergoing chemotherapy for Hodgkin's Lymphoma. Is there a light at the end of the tunnel for me? Do I still have a shot of someday being able to enlist? The nearest recruiter is PRETTY far from me, but it'd be worth the drive if I had hope :)

And can anyone offer me some insight as to the CG Academy?

Thank you

  1. Talk to your recruiter, but when you do, don't be afraid to ask questions.  And if still unsure, get a second opinion.  You don't wanna admit you made a "mistake" after you rose your right hand.  Chances getting in the Coast Guard?  Pretty good, however, you have to do extremely well on your ASVAB.  The better your score, the less (far less) chance of getting a crappy job as a serviceman.

  2. Hodgkin's Lymphoma constitutes a history of a malignant tumor. Such a history is disqualifying for entry into the armed forces. The source below is the medical standard.

  3. First, I'd say concentrate on getting better. Second, finish your college degree. Even if you can't enlist in the Coast Guard, you can get lots of civilian jobs with a college degree. Heck, you can work for the Coast Guard as a civilian. Another option, work for the department of homeland security as a civilian. You will have plenty of choices once you fight the lymphoma and get your degree even if the USCG doesn't work out.

  4. Coast guard is hard enough to get into as it is only 50,000 in at a time. I hear there is a waiting list. If you get better or should I say when you get better your best chance of getting in is putting some major time between you and your illness before they will even think about waivering you. I know it sucks but understand that people get medically barred for much much less than that. I'm not sure if that wont bar you in itself. unfortunatly it is very bleek but possible, the only person who could really tell you is a recruiter give the recruiter office a call and see what they say. Wish the best. Get well man seriously.

  5. I work in a Federal building with lots of Coasties. I can ask someone if you want. just e-mail me.

  6. Military Medical Standards for Enlistment, Appointment, or Induction

Go down the page to: d.

Print this out and show it to your Dr. and have him/her look up the diagnostic code.

The second site is for the Coasties Academy.
