I didn't make the basketball team as a freshman, and sophmore. I didn't tryout as a junior. I'm 5'9 and weigh 140 right now. I'm not that conditioned. I feel like I have the athletics to make the team. I can dunk off the right foot, touch the rim vertical, and touch the rim with my left foot. I run very fast, the coach said I should join track team when I tried out as an sophmore. What drills should I do, to improve my skills, until try outs this november.

  1. What up Jamal,

i think your chances may be a bit sparse because most people who go on Varsity have spent some time on the Frosh-Soph team or J.V. because they all run the same offensive and defensive system- so you'll be a little bit behind the curve in those situations.

i would focus on the intangibles- playing defense, taking charges, grabbing loose balls- and just outhustling everyone.  Conditioning will help- and i suggest you find someone who is on the team- who can show you different things about their offensive sets- because this is where you'll be the most behind is knowing where you should be on offense or defense.

You seem very athletic and i'm sure in the right position you can do the right thing- but you have to know the plays, etc. or you'll be very behind- which is why it's rare for someone who hasn't played on the team to all of a sudden make it his senior year- but i wish you the best of luck and hope the advice helps.

    Go get them Jamal!

Be the better one on the floor show the coaches you're the best and you will make the team
