I'm 20, starting community college next month as a Freshman, had an EFC of 0, and live alone but was considered dependant (only on FAFSA, not on tax returns). No substantial assests owned by me or my parents. I was selected by the school for verification. My "file" was completed on July 9th and they say I should receive an award letter if applicable in a week or so. I will be taking the smallest number of hours required to remain eligible for financial aid. What do you think my odds are of receiving ANYTHING, and how much do you think I'll get if I do?

  1. assets don't matter. If your parents make over 40-50k a year you more then likely wont get anything.  Its just odd that you were still considered a dependent since you live on your own. But if it was me I would just relax and look into some scholarships or grants.

    best of luck

  2. If your EFC is 0 then they should pay for tuition and you'll have extra left over for books.

  3. Since you were selected for verification, your EFC might be changed. As long as it remains 0, then you should be eligible for financial aid. Even though you do not live with your parents and they do not claim you, you are still considered dependent because of your age. Yeah, it sucks because even though your parents may not help you, their income effects your fin aid.

Like said you will be taking the smallest amount of classes in order to recieve financial aid. This means that you will be taking 6  credits (halftime), so if you are eligible for aid... you will recieve half of what a student who is attending full time would get. If your EFC remains a "0" then you should recieve the federal pell grant, federal student subsidized loans and unsub if necessary. Work study will also be offered to you.

Depending on the school you may be elegible for other aid that they award through their school. Grants..scholarships. etc.
