What are my sons options?

After he got married, the Vicar wrote to tell my son that he(the Vicar) had accidently got my son his wife and their witnesses to sign the next couples marriage certificate, as the witnesses came along way to be at the wedding getting all concerned to re-sign a new certificate is not an option. What happens now?

  1. Have different people sign it - unfortunately, if they are far away, the original people cannot re sign it so it will have to be 2 other people that were there. I am sure that is a massive pain but what else can you do? Why did no one noice that the names were wrong when they were signing???

  2. You could spend months mailing the certificates back and forth to everyone for them to sign, or you could just go down there and have other people who were at the wedding sign the certificates. Then slap your Vicar for being such a dillweed. And tell your son to go have a great married life!

  3. fax the documents.

  4. You choose different witnesses and accept that you can't fix everything.  In the end, your son and his new wife had their chosen witnesses and ended up married.  Why let the vicar's mistake be a big deal.  Don't fret the small stuff.

  5. I would either mail the certificate to the witnesses express, or just find new witnesses and agree that it was the wedding itself (and those who made the effort to share that special day with you) that holds the memories, not the piece of paper that certain people signed.

  6. Don't let this spoil what will have otherwise been a great day - the paperwork can be drawn up again, and you can use different (local) witnesses if necessary.

The Church draws a substantial income from Weddings, so let them sort it out.  Should you incurr any additional costs you think worth reclaiming, have a word with your insurer.

  7. I can only imagine that the only other thing to do is sign another document with different witnesses! (who were at wedding!)

  8. The vicar has a problem which he has to explain to the Registrar!

At the moment the marriage is legal but it cannot legally be registered without the correct documentation. With no marriage registered and no marriage certificate that will mean problems in the future.

Your son and his wife will no doubt get a letter from the Registrar outlining what needs to be done to resolve this.

    I foresee endless correspondence here!!

  9. mail the certificate and ask him to send it back
