they are navigational cameras the Mars land rover..... and work in conjunction with hazcams (hazard cameras) and pancams (panoramic cameras) and act as its "eyes" when moving about.

They are also used for satellite navigation devices (like the GPS in your car that tells you to "turn left in point five miles").  They have visual and voice guidance.
