  1. If the tidal range(the difference in height between the high tide and low tide over about a half-day) is minimum,then it is called a neap tide.This happens when the sun and the moon are separated by 90 degrees,when viewed from the earth(first quarter or last/third quarter) and the gravitational forces due to moon is partially cancelled by that of the sun.

    On the other hand,the tidal range is maximum(spring tide) when the sun,earth and the moon are in a straight line(newmoon day or full moon day) when the forces due to sun reinforces that of the moon.
