  1. There are sewing machine repair shops.  There are some local 'sew and vac' shops that service good quality sewing machines and vacuum cleaners.  I think they're a great resource, as my guy can tell me which brands are the best.  They will often have great deals on items that they have repaired and that the owner has defaulted on or never picked up.  Look in your local phone book under repairs or sew and vac shop listings. ;)

  2. the guy who fixes sewing machines

  3. Generally called "sewing machine technicians", "sewing machine mechanics" or more colloquially, OSMGs (old sewing maching guys/gals)

Look for a local shop (often a sewing machine/vacuum cleaner dealer) and then call and find out if they do their work on premises or ship it out, and what brands the tech is trained on.  The mechanical machines are mostly pretty similar, but if you've got a buggy computerized machine, you probably want someone manufacturer-trained working on it.

  4. Mechanic.

  5. Don't know... appliance repairman.

I would call a fabric store or arts & craft store like Jo-Anns Fabrics or Michaels. They may have suggestions or even business cards of local repair centers. You can also try the company's website who made your machine. They may have preferred repair centers.

If you're feeling competent you make even try fixing it yourself. Here's a link: http://www.sewusa.com/Sewing_Machine_Rep...

    Hope this helps.
