Prince Philip could be titled as "King Consort" if Queen Elizabeth II wanted to, however it is still only a courtesy title. King consort is a title given in some monarchies to the husband of a queen regnant. Nowadays, it is a symbolic title only, the sole constitutional function of the holder being similar to a queen consort, namely to produce an heir to the throne. Spain, Portugal, England and Scotland have all had kings consort; however, since the rank of king normally outranks that of queen, in most monarchies the queen's husband is given the title of prince or prince consort instead.

When Prince Philip first married to then “The Princess Elizabeth”, he was only styled as “His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh.” It was only until 1957 when Philip was finally styled as "His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh". The Queen has never granted the Prince Philip the title of Prince Consort and it was speculated that she would on their 60th anniversary, however, that did not happen.

Because he is the queen's consort and a foreigner to boot.  He got a dukedom when they got married and the honourary title Prince.  Personally I refer to him as Phil the Greek

I have met Prince Phillip and I can honestly say he is a very interesting and humorous man. He makes a real effort with people and makes them feel very relaxed around him.

He has a bad time in the papers, but he just says whatever is on his mind and it's never meant in a bad way.

I think the best thing about him is that he has just endured the things that are said about him and has never hit back at the media. He has better things to care about.

Yes, he's not very PC sometimes but I thought we all hated PC and wanted to be able to say whatever we thought.

Phil the Greek is not English so cannot be our King he is Prince Consort to the Queen who is our English Monarch.

He is a bit blunt in his speech, like calling the Chinese slitty eyed people to their face.

Philip is married to a Queen Monarch. No one can have a title higher than that of the Queen's.Elizabeth was heir to the throne,that is why she is Queen Monarch. As husband to a Quuen Monarch,the highest title available to Philip,who is of Royal Birth himself(Prince of Denmark and Greece,of the Royal House of Schlessweig-Holstein-

It would take an act of Parliament to declare Philip a king. And Elizabeth is quite happy being the monarch and doesn't want to share her powers with anyone.

Most people are quite aware that Philip suffers from "Foot-in-Mouth" Disease.He sometimes says inappropriate things.He is a tireless worker for the monarchy,but is known to be gruff and blunt.Philip can be quite charming,though.His lack of social skills is attributed to his very disfunctional childhood.His father left his family to live with his mistress in Monaco.Philip's mother had a mental illness.Philip's first real family is with his wife,the Queen.

I find Prince Philip utterly hilarious!

He is a Grumpy Old Granddad who says exactly what he feels and blow the consequences! He has seen and done it all and his patience with fools does not last long! I feel that he often has a twinkle in his eye when he is being deliberately obnoxious!

Victor Meldrew has nothing on Old Pip! He can always find the 'wrong thing' to say at the 'wrong time'. If he was in my family I would spend a lot of time indulging and egging him on! (because I like the spirit of 'difficult' elderly people and I quite enjoy watching others squirm in discomfort!!)

I think he has a quirky old fashioned sense of humour and he is miss understood!

He cannot be King because he is a "married in" member of the royal family.  Duke of Edinburgh is a courtesy title given when he married HRH Princess Elizabeth.

Strictly speakinghe is a princeof the Greek royal family but was made a prince in UK because of marriage.

Similarily Diana was made princess on her marriage to HRH Prince Charles but lost her right to HRH upon divorce.
