  1. 8 pawns - move forward 1 space a turn can move 2 on the first go, take other pieces diagonaly

2 castles - move vertically and horizontally as many space as you want, take pieces the same ways as moving but replace were the piece was.

2 knights - they move in an L shape, they 'jump' over the other pieces, they move 3 spaces forward and 1 to the left in any   direction and replace whatever is on the square were it lands

2 bishops - these move diagonaly and cannot move forward or backwards they replace what ever they land on.

1 queen - the queen is the most powerful piece on the board it can move forwards backwards and diagonaly as many spaces as you want and replaces what ever it stops on.

1 king - the most important piece on the board, it can move 1 space in any direction but it cannot be taken instead something called check or check mate happens.

Check is when a piece moves into a place were it could take you next turn, eg the enemy queen 4 spaces away, on your turn you must then move the king out of the danger.

Check mate, this is not a good thing for you, check mate the basically check but you are unable to move on your turn because were ever you move is check still. When this happens you lose if your king cannot move.

    Hope this helps

  2. Its hard to explain without just doing it yourself and practicing with them but I will try.

you have 8 PAWNS that are in front of your others pieces like a front line would be. They can move 1 space in front of them at a time unless you want to move them 2 spaces if you have never moved that piece yet. However the trick with pawns is that you can not run into opposing pieces like this, but have to attack pieces diagonally in front of them (1 space forward and 1 space to the side).

your pieces on the corners are called ROOKS, they can move any amount of spaces (assuming nothing is in its way) forward, backward, and side to side. Rooks can also use this to land on an opposing piece and remove it.

The next pieces close to the corners are called the KNIGHTS (look like horses) They move 2 spaces forwards AND 1 space to the side (or 2 spaces to the side and 1 space forward) Used to attack and are only pieces allowed to go around pieces by doing so.

BISHOPS are next with them being like rooks only they can only go diagonally and not forward or side to side.

QUEENS is your best piece as that it can go any direction any amount of spaces (again assuming you don't go over other pieces)

Last would be the most important piece being the KING. Unfortunatly your King is awful and can move only 1 space at a time but can move 1 space any direction...however when you lose that piece...the game is over.

Hopefully that explains the pieces and movements. Happy gaming.
