  1. Those are delegates who have to vote for a certain candidate when the national covention for the party comes around

YunGun is correct...but, a pledged delegate is released from their committed vote if their candidate is no longer in the running, and can then become "unpledged," voting for anyone they choose.  So, if delegates are pledged to Romney and he drops out, his pledged delegate is free, and will be courted by the other candidates still in the race.  this is different than "brokered" delegates who belong to a candidate and who are offered for certain concessions...like a place on the ticket!  this is what, many believe, Huckabee is planning.
