The points are just a way of showing how helpful you are. And others can envy you if you have a lot.

It is a ranking system of control and skills.

The higher the points/ranking a person has, they more they have contributed.  The limit what a level 1 to 4 can do to prevent someone from going all out and filling the system with junk information.  The people with level 5 and 6 have good knowledge but do not live on the system.  The ones who are ranked with 7 have spent two hours a day for a year to earn that ranking.
