Back when I was in college, I used to use up my extra meal plan points by buying snack foods in the campus quick-marts for use in care packages to soldiers. Then I graduated with no job and decided I would pick it up again when I actually had some money to spare.
Well, I've finally remembered I meant to do that. Problem is that I forgot how hard it is to write them a nice letter to go with the packages. So far I have pretty much "here are some treats, I hope you're well and stay safe. Here are also my email and a postcard, please let me know if there's anything else you'd like." because everything else I can think of sounds rude or condescending to me.
I support the troops but not the war, so even "good job!" tastes a little ashy in my mouth. If it's rude to talk politics with strangers in general, then it's especially rude to talk politics to a stranger who happens to be stationed in Iraq. I'm not even so sure about sentiments like "I hope you can come home soon."
