Back when I was in college, I used to use up my extra meal plan points by buying snack foods in the campus quick-marts for use in care packages to soldiers. Then I graduated with no job and decided I would pick it up again when I actually had some money to spare.

Well, I've finally remembered I meant to do that. Problem is that I forgot how hard it is to write them a nice letter to go with the packages. So far I have pretty much "here are some treats, I hope you're well and stay safe. Here are also my email and a postcard, please let me know if there's anything else you'd like." because everything else I can think of sounds rude or condescending to me.

I support the troops but not the war, so even "good job!" tastes a little ashy in my mouth. If it's rude to talk politics with strangers in general, then it's especially rude to talk politics to a stranger who happens to be stationed in Iraq. I'm not even so sure about sentiments like "I hope you can come home soon."

  1. just say thank you so much for risking your life for our country...war is everywhre so u gotta learn to deal with it and support war and da troops

  2. Make your notes short and sweet -- say thank you and hope they enjoy your small token of appreciation.  That should be plenty.

By the way, thanks for sending packages to our soldiers.  My son is over there and I send him a package every week, with plenty to share.

  3. I would just tell them to enjoy the package and thank them for everything they have done.  Keep it simple and sweet.

  4. just  a simple note. like good luck proud of you

  5. Dont write to a soldier write to Marines the real warriors that are on the frontline. You dont have to worry about being polite, probably dont have to write anything on the package except "enjoy"
