The area under a curve can often be estimated by dividing the area into slices (small rectangles) and summing the total area.  Use of calculus allows scientists, etc. to agree upon an exact solution rather than an estimate.  Length, velocity and acceleration problems can be solved when none of them vary linearly (producing curves rather than straight lines on a graph).
