Amen to the post above.  If Americans want to keep expanding the suburbs and the commutes to work then they are going to have to make significant investments in commuter rail because because it is a cheap and fast mode of transportation and necessary for families living in the outskirts of a metro so they aren't spending the extra money they do have on gasoline to get to work and back.


  2. Building new commuter rail lines in the United States these days all face difficulties in acquiring the land for right-of-way, NIMBYism, ("not in my backyard"), and costs in building the system.

    It's a shame though, because a good commuter rail system does much to contribute to the economic vitality of a city and the suburbs it serves.

    I think Minnesota only has to look south at Chicago to see how well the Windy City is served by its commuter rail network.
