  1. If you use it correctly and in all the ways possible:

It's supposed to simulate a moving boxing opponent. What you need is a bag that can swing around freely from all angles. (So avoid those bags that are attached to a stand.) You want to be able to move around with the bag as it moves. Learning how to hit a moving target and also how to stick and move as you hit the bag and get out of distance. Anybody can learn how to punch hard. Punching accurate, and with rhythm is another. You want to hit the bag in the center so that it doesn't spin. The bag also conditions your bones to take impact over and over again. Lastly, you want to have good form and a straight wrist so pain doesn't come back up your arm. Other ways you can use the bag is by ducking under it as it comes back at you. You can work on light punches and move more often, or you can work on hard punches as someone holds the bag.

  2. This helps you focus first off.  If you don't hit the bag in the center it will spin.  Also it will help you develop different blows like jab, cross, uppercut, inverted, etc.  also help to develop strength by hitting a solid object that has mass.  Hitting a heavy bag will also help develop the body to accept the punishment that comes from hitting things.
