What are "Take offs?" (tires)?

So......title kinda says it all.

"Take Offs".....i know their tires, but why are they refered to as "Take offs"???? i've heard of them for race, and i heard of them for being legal.......what does "Take offs" mean....

For example, i want to buy some tires, someone recommends me to call a local bike shop to see if they have some cheap "Take offs" that i could buy.

so what are "take offs"???

  1. take offs are used tires that still have a lot of tread still on them


  2. Take offs usually refer to tires that were changed for vanity, not necessity or in some cases street tires get changed out for racing rated tires. Around here You see them a lot when a Kid gets a truck and instantly buys 20" wheels and tires and the tire company gives Him a small trade in allowance and Re sells the OEM wheels and Tires.

  3. It means somebody used the tire to race one or twice and took it  off. It may be in great shape for regular road use but not for racing so they sell them for a fraction of the cost. Also referred to as a scuff.
