What are rats like in your environment?

What the question says. It's also for an essay I'm writing as well (and currently in progress of writing one). I'm just gathering facts to see what you think about them.

I live in Southern California. In my neighborhood we would never see rats, but ever since they started building new homes everywhere, they started coming out, since there are not a lotof fields anymore. But I think they are gross. We left the back door open one night and when I walked into the kitchen I saw one! It was probably as small as a bird but it was gross! Yea, we dont really like them around here! Lol
