  1. Bad weather made the cars on it break loose, they rolled to one side, the ferry listed, took water and tipped over.Ferry sank.

They had a small leak that started getting worse, then the engine broke down so they couldn't pump it out, it slowly filled up with water. Ferry sank.

They hit the tail end of a hurricane, a really big wave flipped it over. Ferry sank.

Someone left a door open, water came in. Ferry sank. That one actually happened in the English Channel some years ago.

Some nut set off a bomb, blasted a hole in the hull--you know what happened then....

  2. Too much water is almost always the reason.

  3. The ONLY WAY a vessell sinks ...whether intentionally("to scuttle" like for a reef creation) or by accident...is by water intrusion. Plain and simple.

Water somehow enters the boat ...waves or a leak...and reduces it's bouyancy to the point that it no longer floats.

    It's really just that simple.

  4. the reason the coastguard and NTSB say what contributes for a lot of ferry accidents is that they are loaded in the order the vehicles come on the boat and put in an order to save space and not properly balance the ship load, also the vehicles are not tied down, every ferry accident had its own reason for sinking but  this just made the situation  worse and possibly a major factor in its sinking, good luck with your essay.

  5. A "Rogue"wave "Broached" the vessel.

    Misreading of ships charts=ran aground.

The old sailor, his turn at the "wheel watch" fell asleep,(make up the rest)

Or my favorite.....THE KRACKEN.(Poseidon's companion)was unleashed upon them.
