  1. One of the biggest risks is runoff and its associated effects.  When too much nitrogen and phosphorus (big components of fertilizer) run into a body of water, it allows algae to grow much more than it usually can.  Once the algae dies, all of the decomposing bacteria use up all of the water's oxygen, making it inhospitable to fish and other aquatic animals.  The whole process is known as eutrophication.


  2. Runoff polluting ponds and rivers, creating nitrogen overload.

    Putting too much on your plants and burning them so they die.

    Poisoning animals that eat it while it's on the ground.
