  1. Check out a site called Omniglot.

Go to the library and look for books on ancient scripts .

    They should be near linguistics.

Norse. Icelandic is very similar to Norse.

  2. Runes derive from the Phoenician alphabet that came to Europe before the spread of the Latin alphabet which also happens to derive from the Phoenician alphabet via the Etruscans and/or the Greeks..

Wikipedia excerpt: "The Runic alphabets are a set of related alphabets using letters (known as runes) formerly used to write Germanic languages before and shortly after the Christianization of Scandinavia and the British Isles. The Scandinavian variants are also known as Futhark (or fuþark, derived from their first six letters: F, U, Þ, A, R, and K); the Anglo-Saxon variant as futhorc (due to sound changes undergone in Old English by the same six letters).

The earliest runic inscriptions date from c. 150, and the alphabet was generally replaced by the Latin alphabet with Christianization by c. 700 in central Europe and by c. 1100 in Scandinavia. However, the use of runes persisted for specialized purposes in Scandinavia, longest in rural Sweden until the early 20th century (used mainly for decoration as runes in Dalarna and on Runic calendars). The three best-known runic alphabets are:

    The Elder Futhark (c. 150–800)

    The Anglo-Saxon futhorc (400–1100)

    The Younger Futhark (800–1100) "

As for Norse, "From around year 200, speakers of the North Germanic branch became distinguishable from the other Germanic language speakers. Runic inscription give document to the early development of this language."

  3. I'm going to argue with Lexico.

Several instances of a very ancient runic looking script have been found in Macedonia, and it predates the Phoenicians by several thousand years. The Phoenicians seem to be the default people on which credit is dropped for every alphabet of uncertain origin.

They evolved from the Elder Futhark runes, that are thought to have originated in Northern Italy. But I think they look more like the scripts from Macedonia. You compare them.
