Sea lanes are, essentially, designated highways in the ocean.  

They are not as you would picture a highway, but they are simply the routes and areas that vessels travel to get between locations.  

They have typically been established by use, safety, directness and sometimes restricted areas over the centurys that man (and woman) has sailed the oceans.

Nothing is fixed.. for example as ships have grown too big to fit in the Panama Canal, new or expanded sea lanes have developed around the tip of South America.
