  1. Secret ballot implies that the voting are done not by viva voce but by confidential writing of candidates on papers that the canvasser only knew.


  2. Secret ballots were written votes which did not contain the name of the voter.  

    They were put into a hat or ballot box and later pulled out in the presence of ennummerators for both sides who counted the votes, but who had no idea who cast them.
