What are secrets to winning in Barrel racing outside of a fast horse great rider?

Since I am new to the sport I am sure there are things riders do to increase there odds of getting points or winning money. I have a good horse and a great trainer. I have found most sports have "tricks" of the trade. I am not looking to cheat but be sure I understand the rules of play that offer the best chance of winning. Perhaps only going to certain local events to raise the odds or running more than one horse, ect. There are things I see riders do that I don't understand but are probably things old veterans know that would help a newbe
