  1. It depends on the firm, but most will sit down with a client and walk them through the process of designing a building to suit their needs.

    They will produce construction documents so that the contractor can give a quote for building it, and get permits.  Also - renderings to show a 3-d model of what the building will look like (many firms are incorporating 3-d design into their design development to allow them to coordinate things better.

    They will also either deal with gettings the engineering discipline drawings necessary for a complete project - including structural, mechanical (HVAC & plumbing), electrical, and civil, or some firms (like the one I work for) have in-house architects, engineers, designers, and drafters.  They also do construction management.  They can take a project from conception through completion.
