What are sets and reps when exercsing?

I got some weights and I've been working and my arms have become a bit sore. I fouind this site that says do 4 sets / 12 - 10 - 8 - 6 reps for flat dumbell press, can someone explain what that means thanks again.

  1. Which means you need to do 4 sets of this exercise and each set you need to do certain reps.

    And every single set is: 1st set - 12 reps (repetitions), 2nd set - 10 reps, 3rd set - 8 reps and the 4th set - 6 reps.

    One repetition is (e.g. lifting dumbbells) you bend your arm upward and then back to the normal status (downward).

    And you need to take a 1 minute rest between sets.
