What are sets and reps when talking about exercising?

I got some weights and I've been working and my arms have become a bit sore. I fouind this site that says do 4 sets / 12 - 10 - 8 - 6 reps for flat dumbell press, can someone explain what that means thanks.

  1. Set, is a total amount indicating how many times you need to do for that exercise.

    For example I want to do 3 sets of rope jumping and each set I need to jumping 100 times. Which mean I'm gonna jump totally 300 times. And times here also means the reps (repetitions.)

    And because you are doing dumbbells exercise, and it says you need to do 4 sets which means the 1st set you need to do 12 reps, the 2nd set you need to do 10 reps, the 3rd set you need to do 8 reps and the 4th set you need to do 6 reps. After doing these four sets, you would have done totally 36 reps in different sets.

    And you should take a 1 minute break between each set and you shall go on.

    And after these 4 sets, you're done doing it.
