There is a lot of discussion in the text about similar figures. What are similar figures and how can similar figures be used in real life?

  1. Similar Figures are shapes resemble each other but are different. they have a relation ship that is a ratio. suppose that we had a triangle with A=30 B=40 and C=50 and there was a triangle with side D=15 and had to figure out E and F.

    then we would use ratios to figure them out knowing that they are proportional by ratio.

    A/B=D/E

    30/40=15/E

    30E=600

    E=20

    then from here we can figure out F

    A/C=D/F

    30/50=15/F

    30F=750

    F=25

    Remember when making ratios that there are only pairs and these pairs are represented in a picure usually

    for this example the pairs would be A=D, B=E, C=F

  2. Most obvious use of "similar figures in real life" ?  a map

    The layout of everything is the same as the real thing,

    but at a scale of "one inch = 10 miles" or whatever it happens to be.

    The shape of the states on a US map is _similar_

    to their real shapes (curvature of the earth notwithstanding).

    And similarly with a street map or any other.

    Another example: building or architectural plans.
