Are there any things you could get in that could shield the radiation and save you from a nuclear explosion? Is there anything you can do?

P.S. I've already got radiation pills.

  1. In the 50's during the cold war, many people built fall-out shelters in/under their yards or under their homes.  These usually consist of very thick concrete walls, contained ventilation systems, a separate well, chemical toilet, etc.  Watch the movie "Blast from the Past" to get the general idea.  It can be as elaborate as you can afford and want to make it.

Seeing as I've actually seen footage of scientists observing nuclear tests in the desert at close range in similar shelters, I have to assume it is possible to survive the initial blast in such a shelter.  The real key is surviving long-term---how much food can you store, clean water, sewage problems, power, light, comfort items.......uh, companionship?  How about communication--bring a short-wave radio perhaps?

I've often pondered this very question.  I'm a survivor and I like life.  I wouldn't cave to an apocalypse easily and I'd want to be as prepared as I could.

  2. Buy several large sheets of lead and construct a safe room. Perhaps dig a pit in your basement and cover it with an air tight lead hatch. Beyond that, there is not much you can do.

  3. sitting pretty

  4. uhh no ! depending on the radius of the bomb when it goes off ...you will die....if your outside that radius you will still probably die

  5. PANIC ROOM

  6. it depends how close your home is to the point of explosion. If it's too close you'll be vaporized, if you're talking about protecting yourself from nuclear fallout, i dont think there's really that much you can do as far as homemade things are concerned.

  7. If you had a nuclear explosion in your house, there is no way you could survive.

Iodide pills only provide limited protection from radioactive Iodine, and not from anything else.
