ANZAC day is to remember those that fought at both the world wars to defend our country and to give them the recognition they deserve. It is a memorial for those who lost their lives for us.

On ANZAC day people go to their local War Memorial (there is one in most decent sized towns) for the march and ceremony. Those that fought and their families march down to the memorial while everyone else watches on. At the memorial there are speeches and the bugle is played.

Everything is closed for the morning out of respect and in the afternoons RSLs and clubs play two-up, a bit like heads and tails. Others will have a picnic or bbq or head down the beach.

ANZAC Day.

On the 25 April 1915, as part of World War I, the Australian and New Zealand Army Corp (ANZAC) landed on the Gallipoli peninsula so as to have access to the shipping lane to the Black Sea and have access to Russia (an ally to the Brits and thus the "Empire" (Australia, NZ, Canada, India).

It was a disaster.  Thousands died, thousands of casualties...

The following year 25 April 1916 became a commemorative day for those lost at war and it has continued to the day.

The legend has to do with "mateship" - loyalty to your mates, honour, larrikism...

ANZAC day is about paying respect to Australians and New Zealanders who have done military service, it's a public holiday, there are parades with old war diggers in main towns, many places there will also be a dawn service which involves getting up ridiculously early and going and listening to trumpets and speeches at dawn.
