The only places that are ever shown are Machu Picchu (Peru) and Chichen Itza (Mexico).

Aside from these places, what others exist in Latin America? What are some of the historic sites that impressed you the most?

  1. Too many to list in a short answer. In Mexico alone there must be at least 100 rather big sites including Uxmal, Chichen Itza, Monte Alban, and the Pyramids. Inca ruins are scattered along the Andes and the Pacific Coast from Chile and Argentina north to Ecuador. In addition to Inca ruins, there are ruins from various pre-Inca cultures in the Andean Countries. There are also ruins (and almost ruins) from much more recent periods in Latin America.

The sites that have impressed me the most include those listed above, Palenque in Mexico, Quilmes and San Ignacio Mini in Argentina, and the still functioning city, a kind of living ruin, of Potosi in Bolivia.

  2. Well, the only one that I best know (beside the most famous ones in the world, like the ones that you said) is the city of Colonia del Sacramento, located in the southwest of Uruguay. It is an important historica city because of the many ancient spanish and portuguese constructions that exist there. The city was founded in 1680 by the portuguese people, and it was disputed by portuguese and spanish for over 100 years. It was declared Historical patrimony of the Humanity by the Unesco in 1995.

  3. well i recently visited ecuador and it had some amazing stuff. in quito the historic center is full of churches and buildings that are breath taking. for example the the company of the jesuits church is from the early 16 hundreds. another great thing is the otavalo market. it is the beggest indieamerican market in all of south america.

  4. All the ones mentioned are really touristed out. Try something cool and not overrun. Ciudad Perdida in Colombia is very nice (ONLY go by helicopter) And San Augustin. The ruins are VERY well preserved and you wont be running into a lot of tourists or a bunch of yahoos selling stuff (Like at the base of Macchu Picchu or at the Pyramids at Mexico City) Choose the less worn path. Always cooler stuff to see.
