  1. Building more tourist lodges and compounds is NOT a strategy for developing ecotourism. Rather:

-- building lodges and compounds in an eco-friendly way (energy-efficient, using local materials, making sure the design is unobstrusive on the landscape, making sure leftovers from the building are disposed of in an eco-friendly way)

    Also:

-- educating local people (hotel owners and workers, tour guides, vendors, and anyone who will cater to tourists) on what ecotourism is and how they can implement eco practices that will appeal to tourists (using cloth bags instead of plastic, keeping all tourist sites trash free, recycling and reusing -- and being obvious about such efforts so tourists can see it -- not changing bed sheets or towels unless tourists ask for such, etc.)

-- implementing a community-wide recycling and reusing program

-- training local people on caring for animals, from beasts of burden to strays, in a way that makes it obvious to tourists that the area is responsible for animals in the area.
