  1. My daughter is 10yrs. she has been doing TaeKwonDo from  a 51/2 year old.

  2. You know I just bought my 5 year old and my 12 year old each a dry erase board.  I am amazed with how great of a learning tool they are!  (I can't take credit though, I have seen them in many classrooms)  My little one practices drawing on it and practices her handwriting. My older one studies and works out math problems on it.  She also studies spelling words and other things she has to memorize.  One great thing about them is that they are totally portable!  They can bring them in the car and to Doctor visits.

  3. Well, what kind of learning? My kids are 5-10 and they enjoy all sorts of things. They like their gameboys, the youngest is picking out words from it and they all get problem solving and strategy from the games. Anything that involves sharing is good (my girls are currently hung up on Littlest Pet Shop). At that age bowling is alot of fun and they are big enough to get the ball down the lane with mimimal help. A bike or swim lessons would definateyt be learning experiences. There are skill workbooks you can get (I've seen at Wal-Mart and bookstores) that teach subjects like math, or spelling, or history. My kids love having those during the summer. With kids, just about anything you do is a learning experience if you use it the right way, even brushing your teeth!

  4. My daughter loves girl scouts and learns while shes there.

  5. Five-year-olds are very different from nine-year-olds, so you may have to vary your activities.  But here are a few good activities for children of all ages:

    Legos and other building toys

    art supplies

    musical instruments

    outdoor toys

    board games

  6. My kids love mystery hunts - for my daughter's 8th birthday party we did a mystery theme (gave Nancy Drew books to everyone instead of goody bags, set up clues for "The Case of the Missing Scooter"...) and it was a HUGE hit.  We should have prepared more than one mystery for them to solve!  That was over 6 months ago and my daughter and 6 yr old son are still creating their own mysteries for each other with clues to find etc.  It is fun, active, and really gets them thinking both when they are creating the clues for each other and when they are doing the searching.

The "board" game MasterMind is also a huge hit with my kids and is a great way to help them develop their logic (it's for ages 8 and up but my 6 year old loves playing too - he's better at setting up the pattern and having someone try figure it out than he is at doing the figuring out.)  It's also a great game for my husband and I to play with the kids as it's very engaging and really makes you think!

Having fish as pets - teaches responsibility and about the life cycle (since fish tend to die, and often get eaten by the other fish)

Going to museums, the zoo, camping.

Kids learn from EVERYTHING, sometimes it's just a matter of going for a walk and talking about what you see!

  7. I think that cooking is a great lesson.  You can teach them to go to the market and get ingredients together.  They can also calculate the cost of making a cake, let's say.

Then you have to count all the ingredients.  How many ounces in a cup, etc.  Then if you make cookies for example you can teach math. You can count each row of cookies up and down and then multiply.

You also teach about good nutrition by teaching the kids that a main course should have many colors, red, blue, white, etc.

  8. My son and I live near NYC so there are alot of things we can do that provide fun and learning activities.  The museum of natural history is all learning and very interested.  The zoos provide a great day, especially the baby animals, and include lots of learning.  The nice thing with big places is you can do as much as you want and go back and do something else next time.  Even other art museums provide an opportunity to expand his mind like MOMA, the Met, etc.  Locally there are kids museums which are the best...fun activities that provide learning.  Even local farms and nature preserves get you out together and offer new experiences.

  9. i am not sure because i don't have any kids but as a reasonable guess i would say that they would play with toys or read books

  10. learning to cook something that they can assist in making like cookies or pizza.  taking a class in Karate, judo , pottery, art or other that they must be involved in. Great a garden that they can take care of..  Plant a favorite veggie or some herbs that they could use in a meal that they help to cook or create.
