  1. In my community we have challenge baseball and soccer.  The kids each have their own caregiver to help hit, run and score (in baseball).  Another my son has tried is ice skating.  I don't recommend for the severely autistic but it also helps for the kids that still walk on their toes, which is one of the symptoms of autism.  I would have to agree partially on one of your answers regarding socializing with animals however, when my son was first diagnosed, he is now age 10, with very little verbal abilities, we put him on a pony and he was scared to death.

While my son was in pre-school therapy, I noticed that most of the kids (with disabilities) loved to put their hands in the sand pile and "hunt" for the small toy animals.  That was their favorite.  I hope this helps with the other great ideas from other parents and caregivers.  My son, now high functioning, is competitive in golf and is a member of the Long Beach Golf Association here in California.  Thanks for your involvement.

  2. Each child with Autism is different, so an activity that 1 child likes doesn't mean another child with Autism will like it.  Some activities may depend on the severity of their autism and their age. Usually childern with Autism tend to like anything to do with music, letters, numbers, and art. A lot of autistic childern  are "visual", such as playing with flash cards and books with pictures or even a simple phone book. Some like to take objects like blocks, cars, legos, straws, etc., and line them up. Getting them involved in sports such as swimming, football, karate, etc. can be very rewarding for them. Some like watching tv such as game shows, sporting events, and the news.

Most autistic childern are on a set schedule, they like repetitiveness and don't care much for changes. May want to talk to the parents or the case worker of the child. They should be able to tell you what the child likes/dislikes are for activities and how they are worked into his daily schedule.

  3. Every autistic child is different so what may engage one child, may not another. Many autists do have sensory issues. There are many great books (Raising A Sensory Smart Child and Having Fun with an Out of Sync Child) with fun, sensory building activities. A few examples are:  water table play, painting with shaving cream, ball pits and swinging.

Your best bet is to ask the child's parents what the child's interests are.

    Best wishes!

  4. I hear that swimming and horse back riding and events that teach kids to socialize with animals are great, depending on their age and abilities.

  5. anything with music

  6. Try Playing basketball, horseshoes or just passing a ball back and forth. My teen girl likes to do this.

  7. turn taking games

  8. Swimming!

  9. story time, arts and crafts, they have to have a routine and schedule because if they don't they get very upset. Some autistic kids although not many like watching dvds and become masters of the remote. My son is non-verbal but he enjoys watching the new king kong and has wore out 2 copies. He also loves godzilla. It just depends on the autistic kids and the severity of the autism. My son is very laid back for an autistic child and loves to get hugs and give and get high fives. I would get with the special ed teacher or psychologist and see what they recommend based on their observations of the kids. Music is also good sometimes but many autistic people are highly sensitive to sound and that may upset them. Also if they have an speech communication device like my son just got ,getting the non verbal kids in a group with these devices is awesome once they learn how to take turns. Also let them play video games if they are into it, it does wonders for their hand eye coordination
