  1. Pay cuts and cancellation of retirement for ground personnel. It happened to my brother.

  2. Some only fly you half way to your destination then put you on a bus to complete your trip.

  3. Cutting down on wasteful expenditure and slashing unnecessary overheads. Buying aircraft which are more fuel efficient and reducing or cutting down on sectors which are not lucrative and with a poor load factor. They are also taking out all the frills including complimentaries, gifts and sales promotion items. Reduction of cabin crew to bare minimum and hiring personnel from cheaper countries is also being done. There are many more steps being taken, but cannot be detailed in these answers.

    Good sensible question.

  4. Many cut maintenence and pilot training. Just about the only places to save money. Layoffs too of course. And some just close up shop. Things gotta change. If ticket prices don't rise dramatically you'll see a much different airline industry in a few years. And few of us will be able to afford to fly anymore. Pack up the  family and take that trip to Disneyworld soon folks.

  5. Flying a little slower to save fuel.

They are charging for seats with more legroom (to make more money).

Canceling connections. Canceling flights on some days of the week.

Decreasing how long it takes to load and offload passengers. The faster they can get the airplane flying again the more money they make.

  6. Not giving out free snacks, reducing the number of flights, charging passengers for luggage handling.

  7. These days airlines are reducing number of flights even on busy sectors, and also murging schdules to increase the seat occupancy ratio. Some airlines have stopped free baggage alowence and are now charging for each baggage checked-in.

  8. You name it.

    Elimination of snacks

Elimination of magazine to save weight.

Charging for even the first checked bag.

    Flying slower to save fuel.

    Laying off personell

    Cancelling flights

    Grounding fuel inefficient older aircraft

    Charging a fuel surcharge

I see no end in sight. They need to take drastic action. Seats should have to be reserved and paid for in advance.  No shows would loose it all or only get a partial refund and only if the airline is able to sell the seat at the last minute.  This would stop overbooking and stranded passengers.
